Confined Space (Safe Entry) Training
The Confined Space training Program applies to any private or public department that has space(s) that may potentially be hazardous when entered. A confined space is one configured so that a person can fully enter and work, but is not designed for continuous human occupancy and has restricted or limited means of entry or exit. Confined spaces may contain hazardous/toxic and flammable gas & fumes that can injure workers or quickly lead to death by means of inhalation or fire explosion during hot work like welding, cutting, grinding etc. Untrained and ill-equipped rescuers can easily become victims themselves. Examples of confined spaces at UW may include, but aren’t limited to:
- Boilers
- Vessels and Tanks
- Storage bins
- Utility vaults
- Sumps and pits
- Excavations
- Sewers
- Attics, plenums and crawlspaces
- Lift stations
- Air handling units
- Cooling towers
- Tunnels and pipelines
